How to get around Hadrian's Wall

Driving in Hadrian's Wall Country is fantastic. The A69 is the quickest means of travelling from Newcastle to Hexham, but the road that runs closest to the line of Hadrian's Wall is the B6318. This road is much quieter than the A69 and is the best road for accessing the majority of the Roman sites.

By Bus

The award winning AD122 Hadrian's Wall bus service runs regularly between Newcastle and Bowness-on-Solway, stopping at all the major Roman sites along the way. Bicycles can be taken onboard.

By Train

The Hadrian's Wall Country line runs between Newcastle and Carlisle via Hexham. Walking routes and cycle routes link from most of the stations, and bicycles can be taken onboard, subject to availability. The Tyne & Wear Metro is a great way of exploring the Roman sites in Newcastle.

Hadrian's Wall Country is made for exploration on two wheels. The quiet country lanes, network of scenic cycleways and extensive bridleways make the area one of Britain's premier cycling destinations.

By Air

Newcastle Airport can be reached in less than 1 hour from Vindolanda and is easily accessible. The airport handles flights from the UK and a wide range of European destinations. Emirates airlines now operate a daily service connecting North East England to the Middle East and beyond.

By Car

Hadrian's Wall Country has fantastic access from Scotland and the south via the A1 London to Edinburgh eastern highway running the length of the county. The A69 and A66 connect to the M6 at the western end, whilst the A19 provides an alternative route from the south, linking the Port of Tyne to Northumberland.

By Rail

Newcastle Central Station is about 3 ½ hours from London Kings Cross and aproximately one and a half hours from Edinburgh. Trains depart regularly from Newcastle to Carlisle via Hexham.
