Walking in Hadrian's Wall Country is extremely popular for two reasons. Firstly, Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail is unique; nowhere else in the UK, possibly the world, presents so much free public access alongside mile upon mile of iconic archaeology, itself a World Heritage Site. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly for some, the superb views afforded from the high ground Hadrian's Wall runs along are breath-taking.
If you are a walking enthusiast, Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail is the long-distance footpath that runs through the World Heritage Site. 84 miles of glorious walking through rugged moorland, rolling fields and dynamic urban landscape await.
However, you don't have to be a walking enthusiast to enjoy walking Hadrian's Wall Country. Many circular walks and shorter trails have been devised to cater for all abilities and take in many of the great sites and sights along the way. Click here for details of 7 of the best circular walks in Hadrian's Wall Country.
During the winter months, parts of the Trail (especially near the Wall itself) suffer from erosion. Walks that explore the countryside, cities or the forts and museums are encouraged as an alternative during this time. To help to reduce the amount of damage caused whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall, there are a few simple rules you can follow:
Walk side-by-side wherever possible instead of single file
Never climb up, or walk on Hadrian’s Wall
Wherever possible, start and finish your walk in different locations or follow a circular route. This will reduce the amount of damage to the path
